The Sachertorte was invented by Franz Sacher in 1832 for Klemens Wenzel von Metternich in Vienna, Austria. The trademark for the "Original Sachertorte" is registered to Hotel Sacher in Vienna. Until 1965, Hotel Sacher was involved in a long legal battle with the Demel as to who could use the name "Original Sachertorte." Hotel Sacher use a blend of different chocolates in their glaze; Café Demel use only one specially-made chocolate in their glaze and only cover the sides of the cake with apricot preserve
